After deciding to predominately focus our documentary at Bristol Zoo after we agreed to film there on the 15th Jan. After making our way there we had a chance to film panning shots of the zoo, loads of footage of the animals and most importantly interviews. Below is some evidence of us shooting around the zoo with our DSLR Cameras and using a tripod to keep the camera steady.

We took our location shots on filming whilst also taking photos of billboards of each display so we can have something to narrate at the end.
After looking through our research and watching different interviews, it has helped us develop how we need to interview to get deeper answers. We don't want to ask a simple yes or no question as this isn't good content for our documentary so it's important to ask provoking questions which require an answer. Asking zookeepers will be a challenge due to they are at work and it's a busy zoo, but because of the amount of content we need, they need to be good questions that get answers from them. I will also ensure I ask the interviewee to put the question in the answer (e.g: Why did you become a zookeeper? I became a zookeeper because...) so then our voice will not be heard asking the question and it is clearer in the documentary. Questions that we will ask are:
As part of our filming agreement with Bristol Zoo - we had to sign a film to agree terms for our filming process. Document follows:
After myself and Elise made the final decision to film our documentary on zoo - here is the correspomdance for our filming agreement at the zoo.
Whilst researching relevant documentaries for my research and planning section I watched David Attenborough's Planet Earth 2. This documentary on BBC1 was hugely popular at the beginning of the year with the God of natures words and wisdom. The shots conveyed in the documentary have helped with inspiration of what we both want to film at Bristol Zoo.
![]() The Secret Life the Zoo documentary series on Channel 4 reveals the secret life of animals and staff at Chester Zoo. This series is important in our research for zoo themed documentary and has helped give us inspiration for different shot types and camera angles we could use when we go to film in the new year. Interviews: interviews are an important part of this particular documentary whether they are sat down one with carefully placed mise en scene or while the zookeepers are doing there duties and talking, whilst explaining what they are doing in the interview Voice of God/Narrator: Olivia Colman narrates the each episode of the documentary and with her calming voice, even when an animal is ill, she still makes it seem okay. She is the voice of authority in this documentary and it helps bring the footage and interviews together to help the producers convey what they (as an audience) want to see. Archive Footage: There is only a small bit of archive footage when they talk about the history of the zoo and previous famous animals they have looked after at the zoo. Whilst in the planning of our documentary, want a section for this as when in contact with the zoo, they gave us access to archive footage of Bristol Zoo that we could use once our filming agreement had be signed. This is something we want to have more of in our documentary. Facts and stats: There are plenty of stats used throughout the documentary - this helps back up the factual knowledge of the zoo keepers and adds to the effect of the series. We will definitely look at facts to use of Bristol Zoo (e.g: year it opened, famous animals, landmarks) to help when we create our documentary. After joining forces with Elise we continued with her zoo idea and to create a documentary revolving around a current issue: Should we keep animals in enclosures? and the importance of Zoo's/ knowledge they have provided us with about the care of animals. This has a deeper meaning therefore could be quite effective as a documentary - tell a story almost. For this idea, we needed avaliable locations and therefore contacted relevant animal visitor attractions.
Bristol Zoo - http://www.bristolzoo.org.uk/ Longleat - https://www.longleat.co.uk/ Noah's Ark - http://www.noahsarkzoofarm.co.uk/ Court farm - http://www.courtfarmcountrypark.co.uk/ Puxton Park - http://www.puxton.co.uk/ All very different local/city establishments that are habitats to animals. My overall view of Zoo's will come across as positive establishments which enriches society in factual knowledge, lesuire and a great revolation througout history. With my idea, I began to build a narrative structure in which i wanted to portray my 5 minute piece in the style of Todorov (set an equilibrium and then a destruction) As my main structure here are some of my BASIC for and against arguments are: For: - The research and amount of analysis we've found when studying animals in habitats - The leisure side - The amount of care and well being the animals receive Against - Is it really fair to keep animals in small proximity when it is so un-natural for their species - Is it fair for companies to make a profit off of animals being locked up and used only for human entertainment - Does the process of capturing wild animals, turn them aggressive - For example: Tillikum who is the killer whale that killed their trainer at sea world and also Harambe, whom earlier this year had to be shot in fear of endangering a small child. Todorovs Narrative Theory;
1:Equilibrium 2:Disruption to equilibrium 3:Recognition 4:Resolution 5:Equilibrium In my documentary which I am planning, it is important to look at Todorovs Narrative Theory as it will show me how I could structure it. Looking at Catfish and Amy, I have analysed where each stage I feel occurs in the documentary (or film). Catfish: 1: Introducing Nev in the Documentary (Equilibrium starts before the creating of the film) 2: Nev starts to receive a series of paintings from a 'young girl' - one of his fans 3: When the audience and Nev realised 'Megan' wasn't the one singing in the videos (songs off Youtube) 4: When Nev goes to the farm to fix the issue of the Catfish 5: When Nev shaves his head and continues his day to day life Amy: 1: The beginning of the film showing Amy with her family, moving out of her house, starting her career 2: When Blake comes into Amy's life 3: Talking to her friends telling her they want nothing to do with her and she needs help 4: Getting sent to rehab 5: Death of Amy After deciding last week to join forces with Elise after deciding that my idea wasn't going to have a good structure and I was concerned there was no deeper meaning to it. This is our presentation and we gathered feedback on our idea after presenting to our class. I felt like Elise's idea of Zoo's had a good appeal of it because no matter what footage you capture - it still has a deeper meaning of captivity of animals in cages. This is something we hope to address in the documentary. |
